When actors Lorne Loganbill and Sterling Price-McKinney acquired the property several years ago, they established it as a destination for vacation renters and special events. Under their careful vision, the property—best known as the historic McGown-Griffin House—became a unique tribute to its weird and wonderful past.

A Past Like No Other

What Loganbill and Price-McKinney could piece together is that the early occupants of the McGown-Griffin House included a menagerie of colorful personalities, among them a trustee of the German School, a prominent physician, and the builder of the Elisabet Ney studio. More recently, owners and inhabitants can be connected to the beloved Austin “sideshows” Esther’s Follies and Greater Tuna.13 Starting with the state senator thought to have built the house in the 1880s, residents and guests have run the gamut from the ridiculous to the sublime.

Loganbill and Price-McKinney decided to honor the compound’s past by maintaining much of the home’s historic charm inside the main house. At the same time, they reserved the backyard for a more irreverent purpose: a circus sideshow museum. A series of sheds along the perimeter of the property house shrines to the weird and wonderful. A small shed served as a shrine honoring Mother Mary. The larger structure included countless circus and sideshow memorabilia that had to be seen to be believed.
